Direct Talk Privacy Policy

Direct Talk is an Android app made by Ilay Bacil, an individual developer ("we"). It makes voice calls directly between two nearby phones.

What we collect

Nothing. Direct Talk has no servers, accounts or analytics. Calls and your display name travel directly between the two phones, end-to-end encrypted, and calls aren't recorded. We can't access them.

Invites

To connect, one phone shows an invite as a QR code or a link. It holds your display name, your phone's public key, a network name and password for the connection, and a one-time secret, and it expires after 24 hours. It isn't sent anywhere unless you send it. If you send the link through another app, that app handles it under its own policy, and anyone who sees it can read your name. Anyone who has an unused invite can use it to connect, so share it only with the person you want to call. Scanning the QR code in person is safest.

Permissions

• Microphone: for your voice during a call. The call keeps running when the screen is off or you switch apps, and you'll see a notification while it does.
• Camera: only to scan an invite QR code. Images are processed on the phone, and they aren't stored or sent.
• Wi-Fi Direct and nearby devices: to connect the two phones.
• Location, on Android 12 and lower: Android requires the location permission for Wi-Fi Direct; the app doesn't read your location.
• Internet: Android requires this permission for any network connection, even between two phones. The app doesn't need the internet and doesn't connect to any server.
• Notifications: to show that a call is in progress.
• Audio settings and vibration: to switch the speaker during a call and to ring for an incoming call.

Retention and deletion

Your name, your phone's encryption keys and your contacts (with their public keys and the details needed to reconnect to them) are stored only on your phone. They aren't included in Android's automatic backup or in transfers to a new device. Removing a contact deletes it from your phone, and uninstalling the app removes everything. The other phone keeps its own copy of your name until its owner removes you or uninstalls the app. We receive none of this, so there is nothing for us to delete.

Children

Direct Talk is intended for adults aged 18 and over. It has no accounts, and we don't receive data from anyone who uses it.

Changes

When the app starts handling data differently, we update this page and the date above in the same release. If there is a new purpose, we ask for your consent.
